THE PRIMARY CURRICULUM: LIFE AFTER ROSE

Following news that the Rose proposals on the primary curriculum have been dropped from the Children, Schools and Families Bill (7 April), the Review has issued this statement:

Many schools have started work on implementing Rose and they will feel understandably sore if their efforts are now to be wasted. But this should be seen as an opportunity, not a setback. It's an opportunity for the debate which was prevented by the narrow remit and limited evidence of the Rose Review; an opportunity to step back from the deluge of initiatives and ask what a 21st century primary education is for, what kind of a primary curriculum our children need, through what kinds of learning and teaching the curriculum should be brought to life, and how such learning and teaching should be assessed. These are the questions which the Cambridge Primary Review asked and answered in its final report, and it is clear from the Review's dissemination events that many schools are eager to join the debate and take forward the Review's ideas and proposals. Of course, there is much that is good in Rose and that should be kept  in the frame too. But the collapse of this part of the Children, Schools and Families Bill gives schools, local authorities and all who are concerned about primary education the chance to do what was previously denied.
